Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, are hard contact lenses made of silicone-containing compounds that allow oxygen to pass through the lens material to the eye. RGP lenses are a more breathable contact because they allow more oxygen to reach the front surface of the eye; reducing the risk of eye problems caused by hypoxia. The lens material is more permeable to oxygen and are smaller in diameter than soft lenses, so they cover up less of the front surface of the eye (the cornea). RGP contacts also provide additional benefits including: 1) RGP lenses hold their shape and move on the eye with each blink. 2) Provide sharper vision because they maintain their shape on the eye. 3) Provide a more stable and accurate correction of astigmatism, 4) Last longer and are rigid, 5) May help slow the progression of nearsightedness.
